The undoing of the Titanic
What happened - the undoing of the Titanic. The precise nature of the damage wrought by the iceberg. According to a survivor, Mr Thomas Andrews, one of the Titanic's designers, who lost his life, went below to investigate the damage, and on his return said "She is torn to bits below, but will not sink if bulkheads hold. She has been ripped by an underlying peak of ice, and it has torn many of the forward plates from the bolts." The damage caused by the iceberg was all below the water-line as can be seen in this cross-sectional drawing
