Volunteer mine-sweeper trainees lowering a weight over the side of a boat to keep their paravane at the correct depth. Volunteers, most commonly fishermen, were trained by the British Navy towards the end of 1938 and throughout 1939 as mine-sweepers in order to allow the Navy to direct their attention elsewhere
