War Canoe of a Congo Tribe, Aruwimi River, 1870s
A War Canoe of a Congo Tribe on the Aruwimi River, as encountered by Sir Henry Morton Stanley's expedition to Central Africa of 1874. A group of over 50 war canoes, such as this one, launched an attack on Stanley's group as they travelled up the Congo river, but were beaten off by Stanley's superior firepower. On the left of the image can be seen one of Stanley's boats and a number of his men taking aim with their rifles
