A weaver's garret in Bethnal Green 1863

This is a garrent at No. 10 Hollybush place in Bethnal Green in the East End of London. A weaver and his family live in this one room which is kept as clean as possible in the midst of the squalor and decrepitude of the building and its surroundings. Proprietors like the one in the picture felt no urgency to clean up the area and continued to extract extortionate rents from the poverty-stricken tenants
