Fishermen bringing the oysters ashore. In Whitstable there was nine mile stretch of sea where young oyster supply was in abundance, this was called common ground. Throughout the year hundreds of men dredged up young oysters and brought them back to Whitstable, where they were bought by oyster companies to lay in private grounds
