The Winans Ocean Steamer, 1858
Engraving of the Winans Ocean Steamer cigar ship, launched at Ferry Bay, Baltimore, on 6th October 1858. Intended as an ocean-going vessel, she was 180 feet long and had a displacement of 350 tons, when carrying 200 tons of coal. The ship was not a great success, although the American Civil War was fairly disruptive to her career and those of her builders, the Messrs. Winans
