Barges of a German flotilla loading goods at Konig's harbour in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam. Due to a significant increase in inland shipping, large amounts of German Rhine traffic accessed the North Sea through here, and the vast barges are used for commerce and, if necessary, military purposes. Rotterdam profited significantly from its critical location, which Germany envied and sought to challenge
