Ex-President Theodore Roosevelt, visiting Europe
Ex-President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) toured Africa and Europe after the end of his presidency in 1909. Whilst in Africa, his party killed or trapped thousands of animals for the Smithsonian Institution and American Museum of Natural History. In Egypt, he spoke in support of British rule in the region. He refused an audience with the Pope, but did meet with Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, King George V of England and other European leaders
