First Experiences of a Calcutta Palki
A British man details his first experience with a Palki in Calcutta, India. A palki, also known as a palanquin or litter, was was a covered box for transporting people of importance, usually fitted with blinds, and carried by four people using the poles at either end. The sketches show the author attempting to enter it various ways before managing to and then setting off at a speed of around 6 miles per hour
