Jean Rousselot at work at the Big Bertha research lab in Paris, he was a French phonetician and dialectologist. He himself signs his publications under the name of L'abbe Rousselot or L'abbe P.-J. Rousselot. Abbe Rousselot is considered the founder of experimental phonetics. He proposed to study the phonetic modifications of speech by an experimental method and to induce the phonetic laws of the changes in progress and more generally the processes analysed until then by historical linguistics. The two volumes of the Principles of Experimental Phonetics which were published in 1897 and 1901 mark the turning point of a real scientific re-articulation. His instruments seen here were able to identify positions of enemy weapons
