Portrait of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, he was a Canadian politician and statesman who served as the 17th prime minister of Canada (11th July 1896 to 6th October 1911). Noted especially for his attempts to define the role of French Canada in the federal state and to define Canada's relations to Great Britain. He was knighted in 1897
