Central Street, Peking (Beijing), China
View of the Central Street in the Chinese Quarter of Peking (Beijing)'. The view is from the city wall looking towards a bridge over the city moat, its central pathway reserved exclusively for the emperor. It is, however, a favourite resort for beggars'. Thomson describes the area in detail but is repelled by the stench. Left of centre, in the distance, is the triple roof of the Temple of Heaven
