House of wealthy official, Peking (Beijing), China

Chinese Houses'. The dwelling is... that of Mr Yang, a gentleman enormously rich and holding an official rank in Peking (Beijing). His abode... is walled around, and can be entered only by a plain doorway through a high brick wall. The design has been suited to the exigencies of climate... which prevails in Peking.... The heavy roofs of tiles reflect the heat and keep out the cold, while the verandah can be thrown entirely open
