Inishark - deserted island

Inishark, a small island off western Ireland, was evacuated of the last two families on October 20th 1960. The island was their ancestral home but had become too challenging to live on due to the weather and harbour conditions which often cut them off from the mainland and its facilities. The government did not want to improve island access and, instead, provided land on the mainland for the families. Image shows Teresa Lacey and her husband, baby and dog leaving the island.
