Victory Column (Siegessaule), Berlin, Germany

The Victory Column (Siegessaule) in Berlin, Germany, designed in the 1860s to commemorate the Prussian victory in the Danish-Prussian War. By the time it was inaugurated in 1873, Prussia had also defeated Austria in the Austro-Prussian War (1866) and France in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71). The winged bronze sculpture at the top is of the allegorical figure, Victoria. Seen here soon after the end of the Second World War, when the French entered Berlin and put the tricolore at the top of the monument
