Charlie Chaplin statue unveiled, Leicester Square, London
1981 - Chaplin Stars again in the West End : A larger-than-lifesize statue of Charles Chaplin was unveiled in Leicester Square today- the 92nd anniversary of his birth. Inscribed The comic genius who gave pleasure to so Many, the 6ft bronze is the work of 33-year old Essex sculptor John Doubleday. It was commissioned by the Bristol and West Building Society whose chairman Mr Andrew Brooke-Partridge, Chairman of the Greater London Council, received it on behalf of the Citizens of London, Chaplin, the son of show business Parents, was born in East Lane, Walworth, in 1889, He was knighted in 1975 and died in Geneva on Christmas Day, 1977.
