Experimental goose march in Berkshire, BBC TV

Mar. 02 An Experimental Goose March in Berkshire - New Far a Goose Walk in a day?- An why is the BBC-2 History and Archaeology Programme Chronicle trying to find out? The fact is that the Romans much preferred goose from the land of the Marini - that is to say the area around Calais. Dr Glyn Daniel, Lecturer in Archaelogy at Cambridge and Editor of Antiquity who has a Cottage near Calais has recently interested himself in the way Romans Actually got the geese the 1, 000 miles from Calais to Rome. It is Known that they will not stand being cooped up in ox-carts and it is also known that geese can walk good distances. In the Middle Ages and indeed up to the last century geese were driven to Goose Fairs all over England. So Chronicle intends to find out just how far a goose will go in a day. The Ridgeway in Berkshire, perhaps the oldest road in Britain, was chosen as typical of the sort of surfaces they would have had to travel on. There were two gaggles of geese and coming along to keep the geese walking was Ann Bringwell, better known as Ann Packer who won the Olympic Gold Medal in he Woman's 800 Metres at Tokyo in 1964. Also there is Peter West recounting the progress of the Walk. Keystone Photo Shows:- Ann Packer walking along the Ridgeway - a Roman Road - followed by the geese today
