May 05, 1960 - The luckiest Deserter In The British Army Arrives He Deserted In 1948-Detention Sentence Is Remitted: Trooper Charles Rollason (38) of Birmingham-who deserted in the Lebanon in 1948-and who gave himself up in Cyprus last March-arrived at Southend Airport this afternoon-with his Lebanese Wife. A Court martial in Nicosia sentenced him to one years detention-but the whole sentence was remitted by Genera; K.T. Darling, Commending Cyprus troops. They have two children-but their marriage by the Greek Orthodox Priest-is not recognised by the British Army-so they have to be married again after which the children will be brought to this country.
