May 05, 1960 - The Luckiest Deserter In The British Army Arrives He Deserted In 1948 Detention Sentence Is Remitted: Trooper Charles Rollason (38) of Birmingham - who deserted in the Lebanon in 1948 and who gave himself up in Cyprus last M, arch - arrived at Southend Airport today.A Court martial in Nicosia sentenced him to a year's detention - but the sentences was remitted by General K.T. Darling, Commanding troops. They have two children - but their marriage by the Greek Orthodoc priest in the Lebanon is not recon by the British Army - so they have to be married again which the children will be brought to this country.
