RAF Lightning fighter plane refuelling from Victor tanker

Feb. 02, 1967 - Over-Wing Fuel For Lightnings: Over-wing fuel tanks are being fitted to RAF Lightning fighters in addition to their normal tanks for long ferrying. They will not normally be used for operational flights. Each tank holds 260 gallons of fuel. Picture shows the first Lightning Mk 6 with its new tanks being refuelled in flight over Scotland. It belongs to No. 74 Squardon RAF Fighter Command based at RAF Leuchars, Fife, Scotland, and flown by commander Kenneth Goodwin, AFC. RAF Bomber Command's Victor tanker is being flown by Wing Commander P B Martindale, Commanding No. 55 Squadron, based at RAF Marham, Norfolk. The picture was taken from an RAF Hunter TMC 7 from RAF Chivenor, Devon, flown at a height of some 30, 000 ft. at about 400 mph by Captain W R MacFarlane, United States Air Force, who is on an exchange posting at Chivenor.
