Chase XC-123 A 47-787. The sole XC-123A converted from the second Chase MS-8 - XCG-20 - G-20 prototype assault glider. The addition of 4x 5, 200 lbf General Electric J47-GE-5 turbojet engines in B-47 inner pods, turned the XG-20 into the most powerful motor-glider ever built. Flight testing was successful but the concept was uneconomical due to low fuel capacity, and the poor economy of powering a low-speed glider at high speeds. Once flight testing was completed the aircraft was allocated to Stroukoff Aviation for conversion to the YC-134D, equipped with Boundary Layer Control enlarged fin and tailplane endplates and tandem four wheel main undercarriage. Making this probably the only large aircraft to have been designed as a glider and also flown with piston and Jet power (some sailplanes have also flown with piston engines and jet engines)
