Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens

Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, also known as the Metropolis or Mitropoli, in Athens. This prominent Greek Orthodox cathedral is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Theotokos. It stands next to the smaller, older Byzantine church known as the Little Metropolis, or the Church of Agios Eleutherios/Panagia Gorgoepikoos, which is also visible in the image. Construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral began in 1842 and was completed in 1862. The cathedral's walls incorporate marble from 72 demolished churches, contributing to its unique character
