Pregnant Guppy N1024V under construction with On Mark Engineering at LAX - March 1962. The conversion was carried out in stages, First a portion of BOAC Stratocruiser was inserted in the rear fuselage and then the large outer shell of the cargo compartment was added to the standard B337 fuselage, for aerodynamic and structural trials. After the aircraft flew successfully and was demonstrated to Wernher von Braun, sufficient interest was generated to complete the conversion by cutting away the standard fuselage inside the large shell.In the foreground can be seen an On Mark Marksman executive transport conversion (in progress) of a Douglas B-26 Invader. - (photographer - AR Krieger)
