Royal Air Force de Havilland Mosquito NF Mk. XV
Royal Air Force de Havilland Mosquito NF Mk. XV high-altitude fighter. This is an example of the rare NF Mk. XV with the extended wing-span wings, pressurised cockpit, 70 series Merlin engines, nose AI Mk. VIII radar and belly pack for the four machine-guns displaced by the radar. One prototype (MP469), converted from a B Mk. IV, was fitted with moderately extended wings and five more B Mk, IVs were converted with even longer 62ft 6in span wings. Intended to counter the high-flying Junkers Ju 86P and Ju 86R photo-reconnaissance bombers, the five NF Mk. XVs were deployed with No. 85 Squadron RAF from march 1943 but their intended target rarely flew over the UK from 1943 onward. Photograph date 14th January, 1943
