 : SPAD XIX prototype

SPAD XIX prototype

SPAD XIX (19) prototype. (Extremely rare image of this aircraft, with only one other image, of inferior quality, published to date) (SPAD - Societe pour l'aviation et ses derives) A progressive development of the SPAD XVI reconnaissance aircraft, the SPAD XIX emerged just at the Armistice and was not pursued further, not least because of the use of the Renault 8G 50-degree V-8. Despite knowing that multi-bank eight-cylinder engines only run smoothly at multiples of 90 degrees between banks. Renault felt that they could make a successful V-8 by just lopping two cylinders off each bank of their 50 degree V-12 engine
