United States Navy - Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat 42874, NACA 158, of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) at Moffett Naval Air Station. (Grumman G-50) 42874 was assigned to NACA Ames Aeronautical Laboratory, NAS Moffett Field, CA, which later became the NASA Ames Research Centre from 22 June 1945 until 9 September 1960 as NACA 158, for variable stability research. In 1948, the aircraft was modified by Ames engineers to become the worlds first variable stability aircraft. Used for generalized studies of lateral-directional flying qualities criteria and as an in-flight simulator for new aircraft under development. Now on display at the San Diego Air and Space Museum, on loan from NationalNaval Aviation Museum
