Venetian fortress, Spinalonga, Crete

The island of Spinalonga, off the coast of Crete, Greece. Spinalonga is famously known for its Venetian fortress, built in 1579 on the ruins of an ancient city. From 1903 to 1957, it served as a leper colony, housing patients from Crete and other parts of Greece. Today, the island is a popular tourist destination, drawing visitors interested in its rich history and archaeological treasures. The island's poignant history, particularly its time as a leper colony, has inspired works like Victoria Hislop's novel The Island
