Westland Welkin F Mk.I DX282

Westland Welkin F Mk.I DX282 (5th production Welkin). The Welkin was a high-altitude fighter developed to counter the threat from Junkers Ju-86 high-altitude bombers and photographic reconnaissance aircraft. The threat disappeared as did the requirement and in any case the standard fighters were rapidly becoming capable of takling high-altitude intruders. Production continued and 77 were completed along with 24 more airframes with remained incomplete. Photograph date 25th November 1943
