Police guard MP at ?5, 000 slate club share out
A Slate Club is a society whose members contribute small sums weekly or monthly to a fund held by the secretary and shared out at Christmas or on some other special occasion. The name comes from the original practice of chalking the names of the members on a slate. One of the largest of the Slate Clubs in London was the West Southwark, for which Mr E A Strauss MP was responsible. When the payout took place Mr Strauss and Mr T O Devereux, the secretary, were formally taken in charge by the police as they emerged from the bank with the money, and they and the money were practically under arrest until the money was distributed. Seen here is Mr Strauss standing by the safe in the custody of a police officer
