Second pier at Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex
View of the second pier at Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex, built in 1869. An earlier pier built further up the coastline was destroyed by a winter storm in 1881, which enabled this pier to take on the business of landing and boarding passengers for the Belle Steamers. Before being lengthened, this pier was too short for the steamers to get close enough to the shore, so local boatmen used small boats (seen here in the foreground) to ferry passengers to and from the steamers. The pier was extended to its current length in 1898
