West Southwark Slate Club paying out, London

Scene showing people collecting their money on paying out day of the West Southwark Slate Club in London. A Slate Club was a society whose members contributed small sums weekly or monthly to a fund held by the secretary, to be shared out at Christmas or on some other special occasion. Slate clubs derived their name from the original practice of chalking the names of the members up on a slate. One of the largest of the Slate Clubs in London was the West Southwark, for which Mr E A Strauss MP was responsible. When the payout took place Mr Strauss and Mr T O Devereux, the secretary, were formally taken in charge by the police as they emerged from the bank with the money, and they and the money were practically under arrest until the money was distributed.
