King Manuel II of Portugal
King Manuel II of Portugal (1889-1932, reigned 1908-1910). The last King of Portugal, who came to the throne after the assassination of his father (King Carlos I) and elder brother (Crown Prince Luis Filipe) by members of the Portuguese Republican Party. He himself was wounded, and his life was saved by the quick thinking of his mother, Queen Amelie. His short reign was a turbulent one, and republicanism soon followed. He then lived in exile in the UK, being a distant cousin of Edward VII. Seen here as a young man in full dress uniform
