Thames Ironworks demonstration, Trafalgar Square

Mr Arnold Hills (1857-1927), the philanthropic Managing Director of the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company, at a demonstration at Trafalgar Square, Central London, in an attempt to persuade the government to commission more shipbuilding. Sadly, no new orders were received, and the yard was forced to shut in 1912. Here he can be seen in a bath chair, being asked if he would like to be lifted onto a plinth
