Cartoon, The Death of the Great Wolf, by James Gillray. We have overcome all Opposition! exclaimed the Messengers. I'm satisfied, said the Dying Hero, and Expired in the Moment of Victory. A parody of Benjamin West's painting, The Death of General Wolfe, the cartoon is a satire on the British Tory administration's response to the French Revolution, and was published the day before the passing of the Treason and Sedition Bills. The Prime Minister, William Pitt, is cast in the role of the dying Wolfe, with Edmund Burke and Henry Dundas on either side of him. The Mohawk Indian is replaced by Baron Loughborough, Lord Chancellor
