Cartoon, Lieutenant Governor Gall-Stone, inspired by Alecto; or The Birth of Minerva, by James Gillray (published by H Humphrey, 15 February 1790). Showing Philip Thicknesse, the former Governor of Landguard Fort in Suffolk, writing at a table. He listens to Alecto who whispers slyly in his ear, while a goddess springs up from his head. Thicknesse claimed to have discovered the painter Thomas Gainsborough (a friend of his), but was also suspected of crimes including extortion, blackmail and libel. He wrote publications on Gainsborough, as well as on man-midwifery
