Alfred's Mother presents him with a volume of poetry
According to the writings of Asser (a Welsh monk from St David's, Dyfed, who became Bishop of Sherborne in the 890s), the young Alfred (later King Alfred the Great 849-899 AD) won a prize of a volume of poetry in English, offered by his mother to the first of her children able to memorise it
