Bridgewater Canal, built to carry coals from the Duke of Bridgewater's mines at Worsley into the city of Manchester. Barge crossing the Barton aqueduct over the Irwell. Canal opened 17 July 1761 and was later extended to Liverpool. Engineer: James Brindley. From copperplate by Pollard published in 1794
