The Condemnation of St Lawrence by the Emperor

The Condemnation of St Lawrence by the Emperor Valerian, Cappella Niccolina, Palazzi Pontifici, Vatican. Fresco by Fra Angelico (c1400-55) Italian painter. In 1447, or perhaps earlier, Fra Angelico was in Rome, where he painted the private chapel of Pope Nicholas V with scenes from the lives of St Lawrence and St Stephen. The Condemnation of St Lawrence by the Emperor Valerian is the left half the fresco below the lunette on the east wall. The right half depicts the martyrdom of St Lawrence. The two are linked by the cornice which, although it changes in its detailing, is essentially common to both scenes
