Don John or Juan of Austria (1545-1578), Spanish soldier. Illegitimate son of Emperor Charles V, half-brother of Philip II of Spain. With the Spanish, Ventian and Papal forces he defeated the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto 7 October 1571, the last major naval engagement using galleys. Governor of the Netherlands 1576. Engraving
