Engraving depicting Gassiot's star: two or more vacuum tubes were filled to a disc that revolved. Because the light is not a constant glow but a series of rapid discharges, and because the retina retains an image for a short while (persistence of vision), the light is seen as a wheel with spokes, and not as an all over luminous disc
