Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and King of Hanover (1771-1851), Fifth son of George III of Great Britain. On the death of William IV, Victoria succeeded in Britain but the Hanoverian succession was subject to Salic Law. As William IV's male heir, he became king of Hanover as Ernest Augustus I. Engraving
