Experiment XII Apple tree from which 25mm diameter branch has been removed (right) and glass tube fitted over wound. Water poured down tube and absorption measured: quickest when all bubbles sucked out of stem. When 2 pints camphorated spirits of wine put in tube it was absorbed in 3 hours, but one half of tree killed. From Stephen Hales Vegetable Staticks, London, 1727
