Gauthier Le roman of Lancelot du Lac The Knight in the Cart (Lancelot) based on the tale (c1165-80) by Chretien de Troyes Lancelot, having fallen in love with Guinevere, sets out on a journey committed to do whatever he is told without question. Meets old man who tells him to get into cart. Hesitates as only peasants travel in carts. Because of hesitation has to redeem himself by carrying out a number of tasks. Only one of Chretien's tales that refers to adultery. French manuscript, 1344. Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris
