George Birkbeck (1776-1841) English Quaker physician, philanthropist and pioneer of adult education, born at Settle, Yorkshire, who settled in London in 1804. A founder of the Mechanics Institute Movement. The London Mechanics Institute (1823) became Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institution (1866) and Birkbeck College (1907).
