Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715) Scottish theologian and historian. A brilliant linguist, as well as his native English, he was fluent in Dutch, French, Latin, Greek and Hebrew. On the flight of James II, he was appointed Bishop of Salisbury by William III. Author of The History of His Own Times (London, 1723).
