After the Xi'an Incident, in order to prevent the Kuomintang's attack, a part of the Red Army went south to Guanzhong, southern Shaanxi and Shangluo to support the Northeast Army and the Seventeenth Route Army, forming a trinity situation of the Northeast Army, the Seventeenth Route Army and the Red Army. In January 1937, the generals of the Red Army took a group photo with friendly troops and local people at the headquarters of the 17th Division of the 17th Route Army in Sanyuan County.
