Harvey demonstrating circulation of the blood to Charles I. William Harvey (1578-1657), English physician, published his famous De motu cordis| ('Anatomical Exercise on the Motion of the Heart and Blood in Animals'), in 1628. In this work he was the first to use scientific method to explain a biological problem. Engraving after the painting by R. Hannah circa 1850
