Henry of Lorraine, 3rd Duke de Guise (1550-1588) French soldier and statesman. One of the instigators of the Massacre of St Bartholemew 23 August 1572. On 23 December 1588 he was assassinated by order of Henry III (1551-1589) king of France from 1574. History of the Acts and Monuments of the Church John Foxe (1563) popularly called Foxe's Book of Martyrs went through many, many editions, including the mid-19th century one from which this illustration is taken.
