Hercules slays the Hydra. Engraving from Tableaux du temple des muses (1655) by Michel de Marolles (1600 - 1681), known as the abbe de Marolles a French churchman and translator. The Lernaean Hydra or Hydra, was a serpentine water monster in Greek and Roman mythology. Its lair was the lake of Lerna in the Argolid. In the myth, the monster is killed by Heracles, using sword and fire, as the second of his Twelve Labours
