Jean Baptiste Andre Dumas, French organic chemist, 1873. Dumas (1800-1884) did important work on organic analysis and synthesis, and the determination of atomic weights. After the upheavals in France in 1848, the year of revolutions across Europe, he turned to politics. Obverse of commemorative medal issued in 1873
